Rolling Out With More Than Food

Lucy came to the food bank pregnant with her toddler strapped to her hip, looking for groceries for her family. At the registration desk, she saw the birthday kits and asked if she could have one for her son, sharing how she is trying to cut every corner she can to try to afford baby supplies before her baby is born. One of those supplies was a stroller and Lucy knew how much they cost, and with rent and other bills to cover, she wasn’t sure how she could afford one.

One of our warehouseman, Rob overheard the conversation, noticed the baby on her hip and that she was expecting and realized we could do more than food and a birthday kit that day. He immediately thought of the gently used double stroller that had been donated to the food bank just a couple months prior. We had been holding onto it, waiting for the right family to take it home.

Lucy was asked if a double stroller might help. Immediately, her eyes grew big followed by tears of gratitude.

This gift meant one less expense, and a little more room in the budget for rent. She was going to provide something that her growing family needed without having to choose between it and skipping a meal.

Rob brought the stroller out and walked it across the street with her. She beamed the entire way. She came through our doors looking for food and experienced so much more—compassion, generosity and an answer to a prayer she didn’t expect to find that day.

A Community Comes Together

On September 19, Folsom showed up in a big way on Community Service Day, bringing together hundreds of volunteers and generous neighbors to help fill the shelves at Twin Lakes Food Bank.

Throughout the morning, volunteers fanned out across the community in cars, SUVs and trucks, collecting bags of donated groceries and delivering them to teams waiting at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church to unload and sort thousands of pounds of food. Inside the food bank, another team was hard at work giving the interior walls a fresh coat of paint.

The nearly empty warehouse was quickly filled with thousands of pounds of nonperishable food for local families, seniors, students and individuals facing food insecurity. Community Service Day brought in nearly 39,382 pounds of food. That is just over half of the 70,000+ pounds of food Twin Lakes Food Bank relies on from community food drives each year.

In just one morning, Folsom filled shelves, lifted spirits and helped ensure that food insecure individuals and their families will have access to nutritious food in the months ahead. That incredible response demonstrates what is possible when an entire community comes together.
